Learn French Now! 9.0 comes with two CDs, one of which has various key sections--useful "survival phrases", fun activities, conversations and practising speech against the voice of a native speaker. The other CD has a thorough grammar tutorial. This combination is certainly a valuable one for people who are serious about learning a language, and the product is clear and easy to use: in role-plays, phrases are highlighted in a box and their English translations placed underneath, while the voice recognition software allows you to measure your own voice against that of a native speaker and the games hone the things that have been learned. Sections are tailored to various activities, such as getting around, going out and business situations, while at any point you can call up a grammar tutorial that will explain a topic in more detail.The section on survival phrases will be of much use to those who have already reached a basic level. There are several practice dialogues based on common situations--in the hotel, the bar, the airport, etc.--with some examples that demonstrate a wicked sense of humour. Although some of the advice borders on the infantile ("When you decide to travel outside the USA, you will probably need a passport"), much of it is useful and rounds out a well-composed package for someone starting out on the road to using the language overseas. --Toby Green

With ever more people discovering the joys of Andalucía and Latin America, the boom in the learning of Spanish shows no sign of abating. Learn Spanish Now is among the better software packages in a crowded market.The tutor comes on two CDs. One of these has key sections including "survival phrases", fun activities, conversations and speech practice against the voice of a native speaker; the other has a thorough grammar tutorial. This is a valuable combination for those serious about learning Spanish and the product is clear and easy to use. Spanish phrases are highlighted in a box and their English translations placed beneath, and the voice-recognition software allows you to measure your own voice against that of a native speaker. Although the "recognition" seems to be skewed somewhat towards Iberian pronunciation as against Latin American sounds (the complete lack of consonants in Chilean Spanish does not go down very well, for instance), it still represents a useful benchmark.
The part on survival phrases is particularly well designed and will be of much use to those who have basic Spanish. German A+ is an ambitious CD-ROM-based language course, taking the learner from the very basics to intermediate level grammar and vocabulary in 15 well-structured and varied lessons. Although centred around a comprehensive grammar programme, there are also plenty of activities to practise listening, reading and even speaking, with the inclusion of an interactive conversation feature.Each lesson begins with an outline of the language to be covered, followed by practice sentences to introduce new grammar and vocabulary. Once happy that you can understand and use the structures, you move on to see how the new language items are used in wider contexts in dialogues and reading texts. Contexts and topics are wide-ranging, including Travel, Buying and Ordering Food and Business. Although it is hard to imagine teenagers finding the contexts very motivating, both tourist and business traveller alike will appreciate the range of authentic and useful language for everyday situations presented by native speakers of German.
The user has access at each stage of the lesson to some impressive cross-referencing features. Meaning, translation and pronunciation of a new word or phrase are immediately to hand. Games, personal pronunciation analysis and vocabulary flashcards add variety to the lessons and there is also the option of testing your progress online. However, the user needs some grounding in the basics of grammar and connected terminology in order to find their way around the material at first, although a word tools feature is useful in explaining away some of the terms.
