Alice in Wonderland is a story most adults know, and one that children always seem delighted to discover. This CD-ROM version from Dorling Kindersley combines elements from the story with educational activities and games, and is designed for children aged 7 to 12 years. Each user logs on with their own name, so several family members can use Alice in Wonderland at their own pace. The CD begins with Alice following the White Rabbit down his famous hole, and arriving at the Hall of Doors--the first of 10 magical worlds she will encounter. There are riddles and problems behind some of the doors in this hallway, and you have to help Alice complete them to gain items or information she'll need later on. And of course, you get to play with the infamous "drink me" and "eat me" foodstuffs. Alice in Wonderland continues in the same vein throughout, and features many characters from the book--the Cheshire Cat is on hand to provide help, while you'll also meet the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts and others. In true Alice in Wonderland style, Alice herself is a real girl, while the other characters are all animated.
Alice in Wonderland hangs together well, and this multimedia fairy tale is an interesting example of making an educational CD from a children's classic. The American voices of the characters may be a little grating at times, though. --Sandra Vogel

Designed to test your child's knowledge of Key Stage 3 Maths, English and Science, these disks use the same format as the earlier Full Marks Key Stage programs, using simple games based on multiple choice answers. Each of the three disks coves 10 or 11 areas of each subject, giving the user a choice of four different games to play on each disk. Those who have used the earlier programs should be warned that there is only one new type of game in the set, which may reduce their children's involvement in the game-play, and they may prefer to look at alternative programs. The tests are designed to be used once the pupil has covered the basics of the subjects. Using them too early might be discouraging but should the field not have been covered adequately at school the software provides a potted version of the topic, which will give the student all the information they need to answer the questions. The software requires a minimum of 16MB RAM, Pentium or equivalent. --Julia Cresswell

Make every young fan's dream come true as they tour with the band in S Club 7 On the Road CD-ROM with Microphone Headset. Games and activities provide the whole tour experience from joining rehearsals to interviewing the band. They'll love the Microphone Headset that plugs into the PC, fits onto the head like headphones and leaves the singer free to dance and sing their way to stardom. Well, almost. Backing tracks and video clips mean fans can sing along (words are provided on-screen) and join in the band's rehearsal.Want to play journalist? Choose from a selection of questions and then edit your own interview. Design invitations, place cards, door plaques and place mats--all you'll need for an S Club Party at home. Play games such as "Dress for Success" (get Bradley looking good), "Driving Ambition" (manoeuvre your way around a maze, pick up all the band members and get them to the airport on time) and "Hit the Track" (a one or two-player game that tests knowledge of the band's hits by challenging players to identify a sound clip).
Packed with high-quality pictures and video clips of all the band members, the interface is highly graphical, although use of Macromedia Flash means it is slow and "clunky" at times. Also, the basic menu system--where you can choose activities and find out about band members--tends to override everything else, so that when you are in the middle of an activity you will still hear the options ("Driving Ambition: get the band to the airport on time", for example). This can get confusing, but careful, deliberate navigation keeps it to a minimum.
Any programs that your PC is lacking (QuickTime 5 may be one) are identified and installed with ease and the full-colour instruction booklet included is clear and accurate. The hardest thing of all may be finding the microphone socket for the first time and then trying to convince your 10-year-old S Club 7 nut that you really can't remember where it is the second time. --Lucie Naylor
