Geoff Hamilton's Plant Encyclopedia is a companion product to the famous gardener's 3D Garden Designer and lists more than 4,000 shrubs, flowers and trees, many of which were grown by Hamilton in his famous Barnsdale garden. Each entry in the database is well-illustrated and includes advice on what kind of soil and aspect will best suit the plant, how high it's likely to grow, how much light it needs and when it flowers, along with a more general description. And because gardeners (and Hamilton in particular) are keenly aware of how plants "fit" together in a garden, you'll also find cross-referenced hotlinks to other plants in the database that have similar characteristics or complement each other in a particular way. You can do a simple quick search through the database by typing in key words or set up much more complex searches that, for example, don't just look for a plant name (which can be the common or proper Latin name) but also define the plant's height, when it flowers, whether it's a climber or has trumpet flowers--even if it was one of the plants that Hamilton himself was fond of.
Selected plants can be combined into a "pick list" that you can print out in groups to take to the garden centre for reference, or simply combine into a colourful screensaver slide show for your computer. Encyclopedias usually make for highly informative but rather dry reading--Geoff Hamilton's Plant Encyclopedia manages to inject genuine enthusiasm into every entry, making it a valuable addition to any gardener's electronic library. --Rob Beattie

The BBC's Gardeners' World Magazine Garden Manager has everything you need to manage, build and maintain your garden on one CD-ROM. Alan Titchmarsh heads up the team of experts and introduces the program by outlining the key features of the software--whether you wish to use it for reference, problem solving, garden planning or as a complete garden-care diary. The garden diary is the main feature of this CD-ROM. It outlines gardening tasks by type of garden and plant on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, as well as providing hints and tips on getting the most out of your garden. Use the comprehensive plant database as the starting point for beginning your garden diary. Plants are categorised by both common and botanical name--click on the plant that interests you and a new screen presents varied information from flowering, height, care and when to plant. You can then add this plant to your garden and it becomes a listing in your garden diary. When this plant needs attention you'll be notified of what and when.
Looking for something new? Alan Titchmarsh presents a project each month, from cutting hedges to laying a patio or making hanging baskets for gorgeous colour and decorate around your home. After some inspiration? The "Gardens to Visit" section offers many suggestions of spectacular gardens you may wish to go see for yourself (the likes of Drummond Castle or the RHS Wisley Gardens in Surrey)--handy information such as location, opening times and a contact number are included. Want to prevent your beetroot from thinning out? Interested in making your own compost? The "How to..." section is only a click away, where Adam Pasco has all the answers you're looking for. There's also invaluable advice from Pippa Greenwood and Nigel Colborn, a useful "Contacts" section for storing details of garden centres and family and friends, plus an impressive search function covering every potential aspect of your garden. The Gardeners' World Magazine Garden Manager is your complete garden management tool and an extensive reference in one. --Melannie Pring

Changing Rooms is one of the most popular programmes on TV and its home makeover team have become celebrities in their own right. Here designers Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and Linda Barker are joined by show presenter Carol Smillie and handy man Andy Kane to help you give your own home a new look. The software can be used on three levels. Newcomers to the idea of design can look at a selection of different styles for furniture and accessories that have been pre-packaged to give a particular look. A more advanced option is to get Linda and Laurence to show you groups of items they have put together for inspiration. They explain how these items help inspire a design, and then show the design itself. For the really experienced there is a freestyle approach to room design, which you can use to choose colour, objects, fabrics and so on to create your own room. You can work on a bedroom, living room, or dining room.
The other side of this CD-ROM is a database of practical projects showing you how to make a range of furniture and decorations. The advice and information from the designers is useful, and the chance to play with colour and themes on a CD rather than using real money and your own room is welcome. Changing Rooms could be very useful if a room make-over is on the cards in your house.--Sandra Vogel
