"Romeo, Romeo...". There is a new answer to Juliet's age-old question--Romeo is on this fantastic CD-ROM. And not only is he lurking here, but it seems as though a breath of fresh air may yet revive him. Perhaps one of Shakespeare's most famous lines seems a little tired by now, but there's nothing tired about this product. As well as an audio performance of the play and some superb video footage from the BBC's lavish production, this package contains information which will be of interest to students, budding actors and even Shakespearean experts alike. A hexagonal homepage allows the user to click on one of several options. Each section houses several links and subsections, and here you come across information as diverse as the genesis of the myth of Romeo and Juliet in Ovid and Xenophon, Shakepeare's meditations on mortality, time and the family, and the importance of costume in Elizabethan theatre. This phenomenal breadth is quite apart from the pièce de résistance: the wonderful character résumés, complete with hypertext links to important moments in the play which illustrate the essence of the character in question.
The most impressive thing about this CD-ROM is that it really gets you under the skin of the play in a new and interactive way, which makes it an excellent product, one that cannot be rated too highly. It proves that there is life in everything--even a line which has been so repeatedly quoted that it has become a cliché. --Toby Green

Let the Les Miserables Interactive CD-ROM take you behind the scenes of this popular musical with a wealth of detail about the production, the book and the French Revolution. You're in your seat, facing the stage, ready to experience Les Miserables--but this isn't the theatre, it's an unusual interface to two CDs full of information. Scroll around the auditorium and click on icons to explore backstage, find out about the team that put the show together or find out more about the show. There are 40 key scenes that you can see the libretto along with a discussion of the musical themes used plus excerpts and readings from the novel, stills and video clips from recent productions and illustrations of the historical events they're based on. Places and technical terms are defined in a pop-up glossary plus a timeline puts the scenes in context in French history, along with details of Victor Hugo's life. You can also find out about every film version that's been made and see details of the actors, sketches of the costumes and images from two London productions.
Walk out into the foyer to check out the awards the show has won, visit the gift shop to see the various soundtrack albums, find fan sites or jump to the Web to book tickets and buy merchandise. If you're confused by the program structure there's a map of all the different sections here--disguised as an umbrella. Moving around the interface can be a little frustrating, although you can get at the information in several ways, and you'll swap between the two CDs as you go along. Mac users aren't left behind in the culture stakes as it also runs on the Macintosh platform. While this is no substitute for watching Les Miserables, for fans of the show this interactive journey is a great way to relive favourite moments and to find out about the production and background. --Mary Branscombe
