Every child is naturally curious and we all know that children like to play. The Jump Ahead Toddlers (ages one-and-a-half to three) CD-ROM has been specifically designed and produced to capture a child's imagination and to engage their attention by providing fun activities that will stimulate their young minds, making them want to play them again and again.Throughout, children are encouraged to learn letters and numbers, shapes and colours, learn about animals, to discover music and musical instruments, basic vocabulary, listening skills, mouse control, songs and rhymes, IT skills, hand-to-eye co-ordination and many more useful life skills. The music is bright and lively, the graphics are colourful and the whole is explicit, clear and easy to understand. The CD-ROM is easy to load and particularly helpful is a special mode to keep children from accidentally exiting the program. Help will obviously have to be given to the very young, as the program is aimed at children from 18 months to three years old, but before long, the child will want to do the activities by themselves. There is also a pamphlet that has basic information regarding installation and other technical hints and tips, which should be read before beginning.
This is one of a range entitled "Children", a range of "educational entertainment that not only keeps the little ones quiet, but teaches them essential core skills and tentatively introduces them into the realms of computing." --Susan Naylor

Knowledge Adventure
In the Adiboo Choo Countryside Adventure CD-ROM the cheerful alien invites young children to jump aboard the Boocopter, his colourful flying house, to fly them to the countryside for interactive fun.Travel with Adiboo Choo and his friends to visit the Guessing Barn where you click on animals to hear the noises they make and guess what they are. In addition to teaching skills such as recognising sounds, Adiboo Choo Countryside Adventure also encourages children to show consideration for others. There's a game in which you help a lost little rabbit find its mother by clicking and dragging with the mouse. Huge red cartoon-like hearts appear in the sky when they are both successfully reunited.
If they tire of being in the countryside, children can explore Adiboo Choo's magical house. Simple clicking triggers off all kinds of entertaining learning activities--a click on the rocking horse starts a cowboy game and you have to fetch a hat for Adiboo Choo. And when they go into the toy box in the corner of the room, children can hear well-sung nursery rhymes and learn the actions that go with them.
Adiboo Choo Countryside Adventure is a well-structured and entertaining CD-ROM for children aged 2 to 4 and has been developed in collaboration with nursery school teachers to ensure basic skills are taught. Some parental supervision is required but parents are likely to enjoy themselves as well. Also available: Adiboo Choo Seaside Adventure. --Justin Hunt

Can educational software be more fun for a busy 10-month-old than rummaging around in kitchen drawers? Perhaps not but Reader Rabbit: Playtime for Baby does manage to capture infant attention with bright, happy images, baby-friendly audio and a format that responds well to chubby, not-so-coordinated hands.A game of tag between Reader Rabbit and Mat the Mouse ends with Mat hiding in a toy box. With Mat's help, each of the 10 toys in the box leads your baby into a new experience: singing, manipulating shapes, hide-and-seek, discovering body parts, reading storybooks and (oh joy!) rummaging in drawers. Your baby controls the action by hitting any key on the keyboard (or just hitting the keyboard as they are wont to do) or simply moving the mouse. No clicks required. The cursor is a big fat star that leaves a trail of twinkles and makes a magic-wand noise every time it moves. Brushing it against objects onscreen will elicit anything from a childlike giggle to a "ker-plunk" to the appropriate animal noise.
Our only criticism of this CD is that the artwork is slightly simplistic. It would be nice to see more depth and smoother movement, if only to make the CD more enjoyable for the adults who must guide their babies through it. Such subtlety probably doesn't matter to the scores of one-year-old consultants The Learning Company must have on their books. By developing personalised storybooks with pages that don't rip and farm animals willing to engage in endless games of hide-and-seek, the creators of this CD have managed to tap into your baby's wildest dreams. No cupboard locks in Playtime for Baby! (Ages nine to 24 months.) --Anne Erickson, Amazon.com

Knowledge Adventure
It's summer holiday time and the Adiboo Choo Seaside Adventure CD-ROM invites young children to join Adiboo Choo and his friends in travelling to the seaside for adventure and learning games on the beach. On the golden sands, with a colourful boat moored in the sea, children are encouraged to play and learn with crabs, fish, buckets and spades, and shells. All learning games have seaside themes and are clearly introduced and explained by Adiboo Choo's two fun friends, Pompom and Chipin. To start a game, children simply click on one of the main objects on the beach. When they've clicked on a seashell, children can start to create a simple necklace of attractive shells by dragging and clicking with their mouse buttons. Adding to the realism, these actions will even create small imprints in the sand as they do it, and traditional seaside sounds such as seagulls and waves add to the experience.
All the activities in Adiboo Choo Seaside Adventure are clearly introduced and it is easy to leave a game if you've had enough. Children are encouraged and praised throughout--when fishing you have to put a number of fish in a net and happy smiling fish appear when a task has been successfully completed. Shape and colour recognition and counting skills are taught in a fun way, and a detailed accompanying booklet for parents means they can be assured that basic skills are being taught. Introduce little ones to the PC in a fun and entertaining way with Jay Jay the Jet Plane and his fleet of flying friends.Your child can take part in wonderful interactive adventures, enter the land of make-believe, embark on an exciting rescue mission to enable the Sparkleberry Tree on Pangabula Island (which has lost its shimmer) to survive, by hopefully discovering the magic ingredients to nurse it back to health.
All the activities encourage children to have fun, to use their imaginations, to discover and learn about nature and ecosystems, and to sing songs. (Some of the activities also include printable sections.)
The package teaches youngsters to acquire knowledge of nature and science; to learn about spelling and phonics; to recognise letters and build words; to practice patterns and sequencing, grasp logical reasoning and the art of following instructions; to develop critical thinking and musical creativity and to practice first PC and mouse skills.
The manufacturers recommend that the CD-ROM is suitable for children aged three to seven years, but obviously help will be needed at the lower age level. The program is bright, bold and will introduce pre-schoolers to the PC in a non-threatening way. The accompanying leaflet is comprehensive and simple to follow, and clear installation instructions are included. --Susan Naylor

All the games have been tested by children, parents and teachers, to ensure that the educational content and the make-up of the games is appropriate to this age group, while at the same time guaranteeing that they are effective and fun. The appropriate skills taught and practiced via this CD-ROM include learning the alphabet, counting, learning shapes and colours, memory skills, matching, patterns, mouse control, songs and rhymes, listening to music and sounds, early vocabulary and following directions. It is not necessary to click on the mouse to play the game, as touching the keyboard or a simple swipe on the mouse is sufficient. There are opportunities to print out lots of activities and songs and personalised certificates to support your child's learning. Reader Rabbit Toddler is part of a curriculum-based system that is designed to keep children learning all through their elementary school years. Simple, brightly coloured graphics and classic sing-along songs make all these activities a sure hit with toddlers. This pack gets kids off to a great start with an introduction to letters and numbers, matching and patterns, music and mouse skills. In "Follow-Me Theatre", children take a physically active role with finger plays and singing along, while in "Baby Animal Bingo", sounds are matched to help parent animals find their babies. The characters of Reader Rabbit and his sidekick Matt the Mouse are funny and friendly--and always ready to help if your child needs a hint.
Because these characters are in every unit--all the way to sixth grade--and the basic format for each level is similar, children can dive right in to the new curriculum skills without the distraction of different graphic styles or character guides.
You will see quickly why this series is so often used in schools, and we are sure your toddler will love it as much as her future teachers already do. --Jill Lightner

Jump Ahead 2000: Pre-School
As soon as the bright pre-school train puffs its way out of the station, young children enter the magical world of Charlie the Cat and his friends.Just move the mouse and Peter Polar bear starts swinging in a tree, Eleanor Elephant begins to skip and Charlie starts bouncing a ball. But the fun really starts when you go into the play school.
Here there are a whole host of educational activities to take part in. Cecil the Mouse clearly explains what is available and his instructions are easy to follow. If you click on the artist area, you can play an engaging game of numbers and all the time the friendly cartoon-like bear provides support and encouragement.

Jump Ahead 2000: Toddlers
JumpStart Toddlers introduces young children to computer navigation and important skills that they can build upon in later years. Kids will have a great time playing the fun games and following the instructions given by colourful, interactive characters--and they won't even realise that the software is educational. With the help of their friendly guide, Giggles the Gopher, toddlers perform activities and learn valuable mouse skills. For example, in the activity "Give the Dog a Bone", children must feed the dog by dragging items to his mouth with the mouse, while "Peek-a-Boo" requires children to move the mouse to uncover the item hidden behind the leaves. Other games help children recognise and identify letters, numbers, and shapes. A particularly pleasing activity allows kids to click on musical instruments to hear the sound they make.

Jump Ahead Baby engages babies and toddlers in fun, educational and developmentally appropriate activities, designed to provide an enjoyable computer experience.Created with the help of parents and child development experts, Jump Ahead Baby appeals to children at a range of development stages. There are eight separate games using the computer. The programme also acts as a springboard to other real hands-on activities described in each game as "Playtime Ideas". These are related activities that can be enjoyed away from the computer.
Jump Ahead Baby starts with "Lets Play" showing Teddy standing beside a fun mobile that acts as a doorway to all the exciting activities. Each item hanging from the mobile represents one of the games. In the first activity "Colour Train" every object that is revealed when a cupboard is opened by keystroke or mouse click has its place on the train. The child must match the colour of the object with the colour of the train car. The second game, "Let's make Music", shows Teddy and his friends playing songs and familiar nursery rhymes. A stroke of any key or click of the mouse shows them using some musical instruments. Game three is "Join the Stars" where the stars in the sky make a recognisable object or creature. A mouse-click or keystroke draws a line and when finished the picture fills with colour and animates delightfully. "Puzzle Time" takes a look at a complete puzzle, and then breaks it up. The child must put it together again. There are 15 puzzles to be rebuilt. Game number five, "Where's Teddy?" wants the child to find Teddy, who is hiding in the house or in the garden. A click or keystroke shows a hiding place but it's not always Teddy that's revealed. "Picture Fun" shows a black-and-white line drawing become vivid, and come to life. There are 16 pictures to complete. The seventh activity is called "Dress Teddy" where the child helps Teddy to dress in clothes that match the weather conditions or time of day. Teddy goes through snow, sun, rain and bedtime. Last of all, game eight is called "Down on the Farm" where the child meets all the farm animals and hears the sounds they make.
All these games have developmental and educational benefits, such as teaching the child the cause and effect relationship of creating an effect on screen by pressing a key. Some of the activities extend the child's vocabulary, develop their attention span and help them perceive shape. Their listening skills are strengthened, and they learn to wait and respond to questions. They are encouraged to name animals and associate them with different sounds. The songs and rhymes aid their memories, and give them musical enjoyment. Jump Ahead Baby is a developmental toy like a rattle, or set of building blocks, that has been enhanced by the numerous benefits of multimedia learning. --Lynne Unwin
