Combining imagination, creativity and the enduring appeal of LEGO building bricks, LEGO Creator: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is an exciting CD-ROM that allows Muggles to create and build their own magical Harry Potter universe.Explore the world of Harry Potter and master the advanced building techniques, and you can create, progress and ultimately control your adventures. Accompanying the CD-ROM is an excellent black-and-white pamphlet that should be read and fully absorbed before playing. Because of this, and the need for computer literacy, this reviewer thought the package suitable for children aged 8 years and above, though help may be needed for the less PC literate even at this age, or younger players who can't wait to get going.
Welcome to the second year at Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Set in three different environments--the world, the workshop and the mini-figure builder--the first things to be mastered are the gameplay controls that allow players to control the characters and the camera the game is viewed through. Next, discover portals, (magical LEGO archways that transport you to other areas of the game), collect chocolate frogs, find LEGO treasure chests, cast spells, (remember: you must have a wand) control your characters and make them fly, change the weather, create other pupils to attend Hogwarts, take snapshots--the list seems endless, but continue and complete exciting challenges and open even more play worlds.
Graphically superb, the package flows easily and is of the high quality anyone has played LEGO Creator games before would expect. With all the fun of a PC Game, and the educational content of a software package, parents should be as comfortable buying this as their children are playing it. In fact, children--beware of parental Muggles who love Harry Potter and also remember the joy and pleasure of building with LEGO, for you may have to work hard to keep them away from the controls. --Susan Naylor

Fans of Only Fools and Horses, the cult TV comedy series, will enjoy this CD-ROM from the BBC. It includes a range of add-ons and extras from the series that you can use to brighten up your PC and provide a constant reminder of the show. Needless to say, much of this is tacky - which is the whole point. The point and click calculator, for example, is covered in fake leopard skin and emits little tunes, the clock has a distinct 1970s look, and the calendar, which you can use as a real diary, has snow scene style pictures of Peckham (the "up and coming" area of London where the Only Fools and Horses characters live). These desktop utilities are only the beginning. There are wallpaper, icons and animated cursors to give your computer a complete make-over, and screen savers that include video clips and other extras so that even when you are not working you can be reminded of the series. If you are a bit of a know-it-all, then you'll enjoy browsing clips from the series and trying a quiz, while a game in which you have to complete suitable scam type tasks, should keep you amused for a while. Only Fools and Horses is a mishmash of material that provides enough information, fun and amusement to keep the average fan of the series amused for hours.--Sandra Vogel

Ever wonder what it would be like to be commander of one of the starships from the Star Trek series? With Simon & Schuster Interactive's Classic Star Trek: Captain's Chair, you can find out. This program gives you a personal tour of the USS Enterprise, the USS Defiant and more. Star Trek officers narrate your virtual trip, visually enhanced by photo-realistic QuickTime graphics. You explore five ships inside and out, panning, zooming and rotating your way through dozens of 3-D props and objects. Along the way, you can activate consoles, phasers, monitors and tricorders as if you were in command of the ship. The program features more than 1,600 linked hot spots that simulate real Starship commands. The graphic simulations of the ships are impressive, and moving your way around is easy. No doubt this is the closest experience to being on one of the Starship bridges you could have without actually being there (or on a Star Trek set).
There is only one problem with this program--nothing happens. Once you've looked around the ships, there's not much else for you to do. You may be disappointed that there are no Klingons to fight and no place to beam to. Unless you are a Trekkie fascinated by every ounce of Star Trek trivia, you might fall asleep in the Captain's Chair.
