This CD-ROM-based tutorial is aimed at companies wanting a low-cost, reusable PowerPoint 2000 training course for its staff. You don't need PowerPoint 2000 installed on the same machine to use the tutorial. Like other CD-based multimedia-style teaching aids Teaching You Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 runs a little slowly. Copying it to a hard drive is a sensible option.Teaching You Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 comes with pre-assessment and post-assessment multiple choice tests as well as introductory and advanced tutorials. You can choose topics at random if you just want to check out a specific feature. The topic windows use buttons to move backward and forward through each section as well as offering a quiz on the current lesson. One oddity is that it runs in a 640 by 480 pixel window which looks a little lost on current high-resolution screens. PowerPoint is usually run in a somewhat larger format for ease of use. A larger format would have made it more effective.
Two useful features--though not available in every topic--are Demo and Teacher. The Demo mode steps you through the usage of a feature with a voice-over. Teacher mode is similar but interactive. You have to move the mouse, click buttons and so on yourself according to the voice-over instructions. Overall, Teaching You Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 does what it claims to do and will prove an effective training aid despite the clunky feel. --Steve Patient
