The Adventures of Mr Tickle is a point-and-click adventure and puzzle-solving game for children of 4-8 years, set in the Mr Men village where everything has somehow got completely mixed up, rather as if Mr Muddle had designed it. The trees are orange, the sky green, birds fly backwards, sheep fall asleep in trees, cows toot like car horns and horses quack like ducks. The game opens with three characters in the square. Miss Somersault has a special spray can which can respray everything the right colour, Mr Noisy hoovers up all the sounds that have become trapped in the wrong animals and then redistributes them, while Miss Busy puts animals, trees and houses back in their correct places.
The three games are designed to teach kids some simple logical thinking about the colours of animals and objects, the sounds they make and their natural place in the village. There are other challenges too--for example, when Mr Noisy tries to help the bird that's sitting on the telephone wire, he's not tall enough and has to go into the phone box and call for help, picking the Mr Man that's going to be able to reach the bird (hint: it's probably not Mr Greedy).
The characterisation is lots of fun, the animation excellent and two levels of difficulty make it suitable for the target age group. It's also set in the same environment as The Adventures of Little Miss Scatterbrain and The Adventures of Mr Greedy and kids who've played one game will be able to navigate round the others more easily. --Rob Beattie

The Adventures of Little Miss Scatterbrain is a simple point-and-click puzzle-solving game that children of 4-8 years will enjoy. Like The Adventures of Mr Tickle and The Adventures of Mr. Greedy, it's set in the Mr Men village where there's trouble afoot. The story goes like this. Although it's clearly morning, the sun hasn't risen and the village is in darkness. Normally Little Miss Magic would be able to sort things out but she's lost her wand and left her book of spells with Miss Scatterbrain who, true to her name, can't find it. The action begins in the village square where you have to help Miss Somersault catch fireflies to help brighten up the village so people can see where they're going--this is an arcade-style game that involves clicking on fireflies as they pop up randomly on the screen with the mouse. Then, you go with Miss Scatterbrain back to her house where you use the mouse to search through her kitchen for the lost spell-book (it makes a special sound that will help you) and finally you have to find the happiest Mr Man to recite the spell to bring the sun back. After that, there's still the question of Miss Magic's missing wand which involves finding a bucket, some water, magic paint, Mr Tickle and all sorts of other stuff.
There are two levels of difficulty so it's easy for younger kids to get into, but it's nevertheless complicated enough for the older age groups. And it's charming with it. --Rob Beattie

The Adventures of Mr Greedy belongs to the same family of products as The Adventures of Little Miss Scatterbrain and The Adventures of Mr Tickle and like them, it's set in the Mr Men village. This time, three of the Mr Men have got a problem--Miss Chatterbox has become shy, Mr Happy has lost his sense of humour and most disturbing of all, Mr Greedy isn't hungry any more. Children of 4-8 years will enjoy joining the other Mr Men as they try and solve these problems in this delightful point-and-click puzzle-based adventure game. It's in three parts. First, you have to help Miss Scatterbrain bake a cake to bring back Mr Greedy's appetite, then you go with Mr Bounce while he finds Coco the parrot who'll cure Miss Chatterbox and finally, track down Mr Tickle, the only one who can put a smile back on Mr Happy's face. To find Mr Tickle, kids need only to navigate round the village and keep their eyes open. Making the cake is a bit more challenging because some of the ingredients (eggs, cream, gherkin, cheese, banana, glue) won't necessarily make a particularly tempting cake--and because Mr Greedy is who he is, you'll need to make more than one cake. Catching Coco is pretty easy--you just have to find him and then grab hold with the mouse.
Of the three titles in the series it's probably the least satisfying, but younger kids will enjoy it and as usual, the quality of the animation and characterisation is high. --Rob Beattie

In a Mr. Men style variation on the old arcade classic Donkey Kong, Mr. Noisy Presents Balloon War is a running and jumping platform game where you have to make your way to the top level, grab a balloon and then drop it on your opponent, whether you're playing against the computer or against a friend. Each player starts the game with five lives and along the way you can snaffle bonus points by running over rabbits, cakes, ladybugs, carrots and aliens. The real fun starts when you encounter the various obstacles--there are worms that burrow through the platforms, knocking you over, and there's Mr. Noisy himself, who shouts so loud that should you be in the way he knocks you over as well. In addition, other Mr. Men pop up here and there, altering your character's behaviour, sometimes making you do things in reverse, slowing you down, or giving you an extra life.
As in the other games in this series, there are six characters to choose from, each with strengths and weaknesses that alter the way the game's played. Little Miss Late for example, responds to keyboard commands after a slight delay, but can jump higher than most other characters. Each game has five themed backgrounds, three levels of difficulty (within which you can set the overall level to easy or hard) and applies the basic laws of physics. Thus, should you grab a balloon and then drop down to a lower platform for a better shot, you can't jump back up again until you've dumped the balloon because you're too heavy. Similarly, if you stand still and throw a balloon, it falls straight down, but if you throw it while running, it moves in the same direction.
This is good, addictive fun for six to 10 year olds. It's easy to pick up and the various levels of difficulty, changes of scene and character variations mean that it'll stay fun. --Rob Beattie

Designed for children with an age range from pre-school through to seven, Little Miss Naughty Teaches Maths features an animated story about the naughty things the eponymous heroine gets up to and how she is punished, complete with regular warnings not to copy her behaviour. At each stage of the story there is a pause and opportunity for children to play a maths game. Children can move at their own pace; very young children will need to be guided past the earlier games, as they demand a knowledge of multiplication and division, as well as addition and subtraction, while some of the later games only demand simple counting skills. The software features a sing-a-long song about Miss Naughty, which will give some reading practice, and a choice of pictures which can be printed in outline and then coloured in using the computer image as a guide. There are also dot-to-dot pictures, all featuring the characters from the story. The software loads easily and is simple to use, but does need an eight-speed CD-ROM reader. --Julia Cresswell

Mr. Bounce Presents Demolition is an arcade-style game for six to 10 year olds that features a selection of the Mr. Men characters created by children's author Roger Hargreaves.Although the game may be new to kids, mum and dad may well recognise it as a themed version of the arcade classic Breakout, where the object of the game is to manoeuvre a bat or paddle along the bottom of the screen so that it connects with a bouncing ball, ricocheting it back up the screen to break down a wall made of bricks. In this case, the bricks make the shape of 10 Mr. Men characters (one for each level) and once every brick has been broken, you're rewarded with a comical animation. There's more too. You can play as one of six characters, each with their own special characteristics that change the gameplay--Mr. Impossible is faster than Mr. Slow, for example. Behind some bricks you'll find other Mr. Men which, should they fall and hit you, also affect the gameplay--you might get an extra ball, your paddle may be reversed or suddenly slow down. The fact that there are two modes (easy and hard), ascending levels of difficulty, six unique characters to choose from , a two-player option and 10 levels ensures that although Demolition is simple enough to pick up, it's also rewarding. --Rob Beattie

Mr Funny Presents Challenge allows 6-10 year olds to compete in their own Mr Men-themed mini-Olympic Games. There are five challenges here--the 100 metres, long jump, javelin, 400 metre hurdles and hammer throw--each of which requires good levels of hand-eye coordination, certainly more so than the other titles in this series. You can compete as one of six Mr Men or Misses(Little Miss Tiny, Mr Slow, Mr Happy, Little Miss Late, Mr Impossible and Little Miss Magic) each of whom has their own particular characteristics that may help you in one event, but impede you elsewhere. For example, it may be an advantage to choose Mr Slow when it comes to the tricky hammer throw, but he won't do you much good in the 400 metres hurdles. Giving each character strengths and weaknesses such as this is a clever way of extending the gameplay of the title, and it means that although even young kids can get started straight away, they'll find it satisfying to keep on playing. Most of the games require you to "run" using two fingers on the left and right cursor keys, and the faster you tap the keys, the quicker your chosen Mr. Man will complete the course. Winning isn't simply a matter of speed however because in, for example, the long jump and javelin, you have to stop before the red line, hit the Space bar to set the elevation of your jump (or throw) and then release it at the right moment in order to achieve the maximum distance. The hammer's even trickier because your character is spinning round and you have to judge the moment to release the hammer (the first few times it's likely to hurtle towards you "breaking" your PC's screen!).
There are two levels of difficulty (easy and hard), which essentially raise the level at which you qualify in a particular event--for example, on the easy setting, the long jump distance is 10 metres, on the hard setting, it's 18 metres. Like the other games in this series, Mr Funny Presents Challenge is easy to start playing, but hard to stop. --Rob Beattie

Designed for children aged three and upwards, Mr. Silly's Box of Fun makes a good introduction to using a computer for any small fan of Roger Hargeave's Mr Men books. Probably the most useful of its features is the colouring section, which is a basic paint program that allows you to colour Mr Men pictures. Unsteady small hands are catered for by an option which makes the colour stay within the outlines of the drawing. Children learning to read may enjoy the poems section where you can select from 10 Mr Men, each of whom recites a poem while Mr Bounce bounces on each word as it is said. Parents, however, may soon tire of the strident sound quality of the similar Sing-a-long section. In the Jigsaw section small hands are catered for by the fact that you do not have to keep the mouse button depressed when you drag the pieces into place. For the real Mr Men addict there is also a gallery of Mr Men to see and print, and a rather disappointing craft section where you can print out Mr Men greeting cards and masks. The software loads easily and is simple to use. --Julia Cresswell
