Kidnapped! is an interactive CD-ROM adventure inspired by the ever-popular Famous Five Books, and brings the classic tales to a whole new generation. Designed for 8 to 12 year olds, it follows two previous Famous Five stories (Treasure Island and Silver Tower) in being converted into a multimedia mystery adventure. The Famous Five, namely Julian, Dick, Ann, George and Timmy the dog, are among perennial children's top-sellers with their tales of adventure, escapades and clever children outwitting evil baddies to win the day--it is almost inevitable, then, that they should make it to CD-ROM. The basic plot behind the story is that the Five go for a camping holiday on Kirrin Island where new friend Eddy manages to get himself kidnapped. The obvious thing to do is to rescue him, and that is what you have to make happen.
The CD-ROM is very nicely constructed with neat graphics and well presented characters. The point and click style interface is, importantly, easy to get to grips with. You get some practice in gathering materials for the trip, so that by the time Eddy goes missing you should have mastered the way everything works.
One of the engaging things about Kidnapped! is the way the story skips between animated sequences and situations in which you have to solve problems. This keeps everything running along at a fair pace, and really draws you into the story--you might find it difficult to break off for a rest. --Sandra Vogel

Now it's your task to help the children to get to Kirrin Island and assist the Famous Five in unravelling the mystery. The manufacturer's recommended age is 8-12--which seems accurate--but younger players may need assistance. Persistence is necessary as the game is not easy and it offers lots of challenges. It is suitable for both boys and girls. Also available: Treasure Island and Kidnapped. --Susan Naylor

Treasure Island is an interactive adventure inspired by the ever-popular Famous Five Books, and will bring the classic tales to a whole new generation.Brothers Julian and Dick and their sister Ann are staying with their cousin George (Georgina really) and her faithful dog Timmy, and George's parents, Uncle Quentin and Aunt Fanny, at Kirrin Cottage. However, they are not alone: a mysterious, scheming professor has rented one of the rooms in the cottage. The children soon become suspicious of the professor, when they discover that he is interested in an old shipwreck which had sunk off Kirrin Island many years before. The scene is set, the story unfolds, then players must find the clues, disentangle the secrets, solve the puzzles and lead the Famous Five into a thrilling adventure involving caves, secret hiding places, rowing boats, castle ruins, dungeons and hidden treasure.
The installation process is comparatively simple, and is adequately explained in the accompanying information booklet. In the main it is easily followed, and should be read before commencing the game. However, in the section "helpful hints for trickier puzzles" in which five difficult puzzles are written in secret code, it would have been more helpful if the words had been more thoroughly checked before publication as several mistakes are made. It would also have been advantageous if reference had been made somewhere in the pamphlet to the help available via the start menu: clicking on Start then Programs then Famous Five then Helpful Hints unlocks this section, where varying degrees of help are offered.
The manufacturer's recommended age is 8-12--which seems accurate--but younger players may need assistance. Persistence is necessary, as the game is not easy, and it must be remembered that only the tip of the cursor is used, when combing things together or using things.
All in all, the game is intelligent, interactive and challenging, with superb graphics. The game really brings the characters of the Famous Five to life. Also available: Silver Tower and Kidnapped. --Susan Naylor
