Version 10 of Symatec's remote-control utility, pcAnywhere, sees the core functionality of previous versions remain the same: it lets you operate your PC from afar when you need to; for example access office e-mail or run company applications from home or the road. You can also use it to transfer files to an Internet server. pcAnywhere remains, however, essentially a business product, as its complexity will leave most home users flummoxed--you won't find any handholding wizards in version 10, as they've been removed. In fact, those less experienced home users will probably be better off with Laplink. The choice among remote control utilities has dwindled over the past few years to the point where these two are the only real contenders in the general market. Choosing which is the best has been a close call but, in the recent past, pcAnywhere has been considered the better product--but only by a nose. So, what's new in version 10? Well, there's a new, simpler user interface, there's support for the excellent LiveUpdate facility, security has been significantly tightened up and to round if off there are a host of minor additions and improvements. If you run Windows NT or 2000 you can now install "installation packages" that add customised versions of pcAnywhere in the "flavour" you specify, to other remote systems. It might lack wizards but once set up, pcAnywhere 10 is pretty easy to use--connect to a remote host PC and its desktop appears in a window on your remote PC. Once connected, you can do most of the things you could if you were actually sitting in front of the other PC. Security wasn't great in the previous version but that's been rectified in this release--it now has more security features than any other remote control application, especially if you're running Windows 2000. pcAnywhere is nearly hack-proof, too. It can now recognise even the slightest change to its DLLs, Registry entries and executables and it won't work if it discovers modifications. It's handling of encryption is better overall, too. --Roger Gann

01 Communique
This communication software package aims to let users manage phone, fax and e-mail messages in one place. It is strongest on phone and fax communication, and includes the features of an office phone system, such as speed dials, unlimited voicemail boxes and fax forwarding to remote locations. It can answer your incoming calls on the computer, distinguish voice calls from faxes, and allow you to provide customised voice menu services for your callers. You can also set up a fax back service whereby callers request archived faxes using voice-driven menus. Basic support is provided for sending and receiving e-mails, but not including automatic message filtering, searching or message storage in multiple folders. For major use of e-mail, users will still need to turn to specialist mail programs such as Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Outlook. Communicate's phone book database will hold multiple phone numbers, fax numbers, postal addresses and other information for each contact. Custom fields can be added, and searches carried out on any field. The data is stored in the common DBF format for ease of import and export. The visual design of this budget package can be somewhat inconsistent and confusing. The main screen represents a telephone answering machine, and all functionality is reached through this interface--a quirky approach that might be intuitive for those unfamiliar with the usual conventions of Windows packages.--Frank Pennycook -
