Nearly every science fiction movie has a scene where a human interfaces with a computer by speaking instead of typing. Programs like ViaVoice Pro are making this sort of interaction a reality today, with more accuracy than ever before, thanks to faster computer processors and better recognition algorithms. The ViaVoice Pro package looks a little pricey at first glance but you get a lot for your money. Along with the software and a well-written user's manual comes a quality headset microphone with a built-in speaker. This headset attaches to your sound card (it has to have at least a microphone input to be compatible with this product) and is tested and calibrated during the software installation. The entire installation took us less than 10 minutes. ViaVoice requires some training after it is installed; the training is broken down into a series of sessions that last anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. At these times, users read passages while the software performs voice analysis. You can also let it sift through documents you have already written so it can flag words you use that aren't in its main dictionary. We saw accuracy rates that varied from 90 to 95 percent after only a half hour of training, with the accuracy slowly improving as we used the software more. Accuracy never reached 100 percent (and even a 98 percent accuracy rate is more annoying than you'd think), and our dictation speed never got close to our typing speed, but it was strangely liberating to use ViaVoice for daily tasks. The software automatically integrated with our operating system, word processor, Web browser, and other programs to make voice recognition nearly ubiquitous. We were able to switch between active windows on the desktop and launch programs with simple spoken commands. Our only real problem (aside from the fact that this technology is not going to be 100 percent accurate in the foreseeable future) was in getting comfortable with talking to an inanimate object. Once the awkwardness dissipated, we were left with what has become an indispensable tool that could benefit anyone with a fast PC. --T. Byrl Baker
