Filled your C: partition, but still have plenty of room on D:? Want to run Linux and Windows on the same PC? You need PartitionMagic 8PartitionMagic is a lot more than a simple partitioning tool for hard drives these days. Not that changing your partitions without damaging the data in them is a particularly easy procedure, just that it might seem that way. In fact, PartitionMagic 8 can repartition your hard drive, set up multiple operating systems and even perform scheduled backups to protect your data.
The core program, which can be run from Windows or in DOS mode directly from a boot floppy, enables you to change the size of existing partitions, create new ones, merge two into one and so on. This is all achieved in a logical and straightforward way, using a new group of Wizards and with a number of safety checks to make sure you do what you intend.
Any of the changes you make, happen without any disturbance to the data you already have on your hard drive. The program can handle IDE and SCSI hard drives and in this new version adds external drives linked to USB2 or FireWire ports. You need quite a bit of memory in your PC to run the program--128 MB in Windows XP, for example.
BootMagic is bundled with Partition Magic 8 and is a well-featured boot manager which enables you to install several different operating systems on your PC and switch between them at start-up. You can include versions of Windows and other operating systems such as Linux available on the same PC, though the documentation is a little sketchy on exactly which operating systems it supports. --Simon Williams

The idea behind DaviDeo 2.0 Professional is simple and intriguing. By using the advanced DivX codec (based on MPEG-4 compression) you can squeeze very large DVD movies so that they'll fit on a recordable CD and you can watch them on your PC using the supplied player. Alternatively, you can create a VideoCD which will then play back on a wide range of consumer DVD players.Setting the software up is simple. You tell the program where your DVD drive is, where your DVD player software is, confirm your PC's processor, where you'd like any temporary video files stored and confirm that you want the screen saver turned off during encoding. If you've got a DVD drive and a separate recordable CD drive, you can convert movies on the fly, straight onto the blank CD; alternatively, DaviDeo 2.0 Professional will create a temporary video file on your hard disk which you can write to CD later on. Along the way you can fiddle with various other settings, most notably the image size (i.e., 16:9 or widescreen cinema format) and the allowable final file size which is useful to ensure that a long video doesn't span two discs. If you don't want to know too much about what's going on under the hood however, accepting DaviDeo 2.0's pre-sets usually does the trick.
Some words of warning. Reading, writing and compressing video like this requires powerful hardware and you should take the minimum recommended configuration of a 500 MHz Pentium III, 64 MB of RAM with 10 GB free hard disk space very seriously--indeed, exceed it if you can. Even then, Mediagold recommends that because data compression can take several hours, you'd be wise to start the process in the evening and let it run all night. Second, although this technically allows you to make copies of DVDs, it does not permit you to infringe the copyright of any commercial DVDs you may own by trying to copy them. This program simply allows you to make copies of DVDs you've created yourself onto a recordable CD that you can then play back on a home DVD player.
Because there are so many different drives, recordable media and players available, recording video like this is a bit of an imprecise science--in other words you can't guarantee that every video you copy will play back on every PC or DVD player--but that accepted, this is an easy-to-use program that lets you take advantage of what's currently the best video compression available in the world today. --Rob Beattie

CDs were a brilliant invention. Packing a mammoth 650Mb of data onto a slim disc that weighs next to nothing, they have made it simple for us to load our favourite albums, games and computer programs quickly onto our PCs. Brilliant, but not brilliant enough. As more and more of us take our computing on the move, the transporting of even a handful of CDs can become irksome. Add the fact that a spinning CD is a drain on the precious battery life of your laptop, then the hassle of ejecting and reinserting CDs on trains and aeroplanes, and an even more compact medium starts to look appealing. Enter the third version of Microtest's Virtual CD software. It throws the CDs away altogether, extracting the information from the discs, and then compressing it on your hard disk by up to 95 per cent.Once Virtual CD has created its version of your CD, be it a copy of Microsoft Office or the new Radiohead album, an icon pops up in the program's browser on your computer desktop, just like any program icon in fact. And just like a program icon, you click... and the virtual CD runs like the real thing.
An obvious bonus for those who spend a lot of time travelling is that they can take their entire music CD collection on the road with them on their laptop, and not fill up their luggage or hard disk in the process.
Even on your desktop PC, packages which require the insertion of multiple CDs will be made much less tedious. And the fact that Virtual CD runs six times faster than a standard 32speed CD-ROM drive, should ensure fewer dead-stops during graphics-heavy games, or indeed on any programs you previously ran direct from the CD. --John Rennie
