If a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, then what does that make the Britannica Quizmaster, which gathers together 2,800 questions (and, thankfully, answers) on a wide range of subjects, including literature, sport, geography, science and history? If you're a quiz fan it makes a good choice, whether you're planning a quiz party at home with family and friends or off on a long, solitary journey; as the title suggests, all the material comes from the Encyclopaedia Britannica. From the opening screen you can select your subject, difficulty level and whether you'd like the quiz to be timed or untimed. The timed quizzes last three minutes, the untimed ones allow you to choose between 10 and 50 questions. A plummy-voiced quizmaster introduces the program and reads out the questions, after which you'll see four answers, only one of which is correct; should the quizmaster's voice irritate you, you can mute him. Clicking on an answer moves you on to the next question.
At the end of each quiz you're given a score and shown all the correct answers. In addition, there's a Web-style link after each answer which, when clicked, displays a paragraph or two of extra information about the subject. Every time the program loads you're invited to type in your name so it can track the questions you've already been asked and avoid repetition.
In addition to specific subject areas there's a quiz called Kaleidoscope which takes questions from every topic and another called Audio/Video which provides multimedia and audio clues as the questions are being asked. The difficulty of the questions means that it's not suitable for kids--unless they're particularly brainy--but otherwise this is a quality product with a simple interface that will reward quiz fans. --Rob Beattie
