BBC Multimedia
The Maths GCSE Revision CD from the BBC's Bitesize Revision series is an excellent resource for study and preparation for exams. Installable on a PC operating with Windows 3.1, Windows 95 or 98, it presents you with a full regimen from which you can organise effective revision over any period of time. Multiple users are supported, each able to keep track of his or her own progress. There are plenty of practice questions and "revision bites", and you can highlight areas on which more study is necessary. Work from the CD can be printed in PDF format to take away from the computer, and you can pace your progress in several different ways, coming back to the desired place on subsequent sessions.Maths covered include all items dealt within GCSE standard, with study divided by tier (Foundation and Intermediate) which is selectable at the start of revision. Topics cover several subjects extensively, including probability, data handling and algebra, all clearly illustrated with examples and plenty of diagrams. Reference tables and summaries are available, and you can keep your own fully organised and personalised notebook alongside lessons. A full and realistic examination paper culminates the study process. --Wilf Hey

Designed to help candidates revise for their GCSE English, Maths and Science, this three-CD set tests their command of the basic information needed to get through the exams. The games may appear rather unsophisticated to teenagers used to playing the complex games now on the market, but they are a way of sugar-coating the work needed to revise. (Those who have used Full Marks products at an earlier level should be warned that there is only one new type of game not found on earlier sets, and even some of the questions are repeated from the SATS Key Stage 3 sets.)Each of the three disks covers 10 to 11 areas of each subject, giving the user a choice of four different games to play on each disk. These test a student's knowledge using multiple choice questions. Each question is colour coded, and the object is to match the answer to a feature of the same colour in the game. If the student gets the answer wrong, the correct solution is highlighted. Should they need further help revising the subject, each level has help pages which give a summary of the field and provide all the information they need to get the correct answer. The software requires a minimum of 16MB RAM, Pentium or equivalent. --Julia Cresswell

This CD-ROM, designed for use within Windows 95 or 98 on a PC, endeavours to form the basis of both tutorial and revision notes for the GCSE Maths course. It is not intended as a substitute for initial study, but as a tutorial to accompany the actual course. The material in this course consists of three basic types: interactive lessons, tests, and exams. The lessons are bright and witty, usually involving moving figures. Interactivity is urged, and includes working out problems (with drag and drop from multiple choice) and a pop up representation of a calculator with which to fill in or determine numbers or quantities to fill in blanks. As the material is installed and copied to disk, an individual course, including progress through it, can be personalised and charted. The complexity level of material and interactive elements can be selected in advance, and the effect is both dramatic and helpful. Accompanying the installation CD is a short manual with simple instructions and a headings summary of topics covered. Screens, which include some well-designed "cribs" (short, useful summaries presented in a visually easy to remember format) can usually be printed. This will prove to be a useful tool as part of a purposeful revision programme. About 38 Megabytes are stored on the local hard disk to support the running of this program, plus another 5 megabytes of specific course material. --Wilf Hey -
Letts
The Letts range of GCSE titles are revision courses on CD-ROM covering every exam board. Each title is designed with the specific course in mind--you cannot revise the same way for each subject (as there are no set "right" or "wrong" answers in English, unlike Chemistry for example). Once the program has been installed (please note you will still need to put the CD in the drive due to the large amount of content) you will need to log in as a user. Multiple users can be entered and all individual scores and progress will be stored. You're now ready to revise. The main screen provides three main options-Revision, Progress and Mock Exam. "Revision" is broken into the main study sections and includes exam and revision hints and tips. "Progress" is where you'll find the records of results, how much content you've covered and which areas need more practice. The "Mock Exam" includes the answers, so you can test yourself first or run through the paper and view the answers at the same time. As well, the software comes with a manual that's also available online within the program, a timer which allows you to set limits for revision sessions and a pop-up notebook. Titles available in the Letts GCSE range are Maths, English, Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, French, German and Spanish. -
