It is well known that the urbanisation which accompanied the 19th and 20th centuries between people and the natural world. Paradoxically, while we are supposedly entering into a "knowledge-based economy", the specialised knowledge which previous generations had of the natural world has been eroded. It is because of this trend that the AA Interactive Encyclopedia of British & European Birds CD-ROM--which deals with the families, orders, ecology, evolution and distinguishing features of British and European birds--is particularly valuable. The information which it contains is first-rate, and the video links, while sometimes a little dark and unclear, are relevant and add to the knowledge of the user. One of the most interesting features of all is an interactive map showing the distributive patterns of 427 species of bird.
The package comes with a variety of zones, each with different things to offer. There is a hide where you can explore habitats and bird watching, an aviary where you can learn about the structure and function of birds, and a feature called the "bird search", where you can test your avian knowledge. Although the graphics sometimes leave a little to be desired, this is still a first-rate product which should go a long way towards redressing the nature gap in the new technological age. --Toby Green

The AA Where to Stay in Britain & Ireland CD-ROM is a comprehensive accommodation guide covering all types of places to stay from bed and breakfast to the most expensive of hotels. The AA has been publishing this guide for several years now and this time around the interface has had an overhaul. There are more than 7,000 establishments covered and it is still easy to find precisely what you want. First choose a location. Then point-and-click at the screen to indicate the maximum you are prepared to pay per night, the minimum AA rating you will tolerate and how far away from your chosen location you are prepared to stay. Click "Search" and within a few seconds a selection of places is listed. Each one is located on a map. You can view a picture, read a description, check the most minute of details (is there a pool? in-room television? phone in my room?), add your own comments and if you have an Internet connection, even book there and then online.
If you are interested in staying in Central London a separate search tool and location map provides pinpoint accuracy. Where to Stay in Britain and Ireland is extremely easy to use, searches its own database fast and with that vital online linking enables accommodation booking in the blinking of an eye. It is a "must have" for any regular traveller in Britain and Ireland. --Sandra Vogel

When it comes to eating out, recommendations are often the best way to avoid disappointment. AA Where to Eat in Britain and Ireland is a great way of getting recommendations for restaurants and pubs from an organisation that has rated over 1800 restaurants and 2000 pubs. The results are brought together in this CD-ROM covering the whole of Britain and Ireland. There are separate search systems if you want to find somewhere to eat while on holiday or organise an event such as a wedding or party but whichever you choose the principles are the same (although the search options are somewhat differently structured). Either way, a few quick points and clicks to choose, for example, how much you are prepared to pay, how far from your selected destination you are prepared to travel, whether you require vegetarian food and so on result in a selection of places being made automatically. You can then step through these checking out detailed information--what are the various pricing structures, opening times and so on. With contact information to hand, including e-mail addresses, you can make a booking there and then.
Where to Eat in Britain and Ireland is a well thought through title suited to anyone who plans on spending time away from home without wasting any time searching for somewhere to dine. --Sandra Vogel
