This CD-ROM is designed to help 7-11 year olds with Key Stage Two work, particularly in Maths, Geography, Physics, Biology and Computing. It enables children of this age to use simple spreadsheets, and then to move on to more advanced ones--it can be set at four different levels of expertise. It also helps to children to become more familiar with certain aspects of mathematics, covering such concepts as average, maximum and minimum. The quality of the programme is excellent but the instructions are less so.If it were used by a teacher in school or if children were introduced to the programme by an adult who had grappled with it first (which might take some time, depending on how used to such things the adult happened to be), it should prove both useful and stimulating. With this programme children can put together, analyse and display information in very professional ways, including colourful graphs and charts, and visually simpler, but very grown-up looking spreadsheets. The drawback is that a less "tech-friendly" child might become confused and discouraged on first using this product, especially one who tried it out unaided. Once children are used to the product, they should find it satisfying and interesting.
Another advantage is that, together with Letts Primary School IT Skills Database, Letts Primary School IT Skills Spreadsheet gives a very practical introduction to a range of skills that will be useful in an increasingly computer-dominated world of work. --Rebecca Pickering

An ingenious educational tool, this CD-ROM is pitched at primary school children of every level of ability. It is designed to help 7-11 year olds with Key Stage Two work, such as creating graphs to show the results of science experiments or any kind of activity whose results can be depicted graphically. The Database package enables the user to experience much of the power of an office database in a child-friendly format. The quality of the programme is excellent but the instructions somewhat less so.If it were used by a teacher in school or if children were introduced to the programme by an adult who had grappled with it first (which might take some time, depending on how used to such things the adult happened to be), it should prove to be well worth the cost. The colourful graphs and charts that children can produce with this programme look very professional, streets ahead of the old hand-drawn, scruffy jobs that their parents produced. The big potential drawback is that this otherwise impressive product might confuse a less "tech-friendly" child, especially one who tries it out unaided.
Once familiar with the product, children will find it a satisfying and interesting tool, able to be set at four different levels of expertise. Together with Letts Primary School IT Skills Spreadsheet, it can also lay claim to giving a practical introduction to a range of skills that will prove useful in the evermore computerised world of work. --Rebecca Pickering
