Learning Ladder Year 4 is a fantastic CD-ROM aimed at Year 4 children. It is structured so that children listen to a lesson and then carry out exercises that help to consolidate the literacy and numeracy they are learning as part of the school curriculum.Exercises can be done at five different levels of difficulty, so that children are challenged and continue to make progress. For every 400 points that a child scores, they are rewarded with new pictures to use with the printing machine. As they gather more pictures they can enjoy making their own cards, invitations and labels, which can be printed out.
Children can also have lots of fun navigating around Science City and learning lots of facts along the way. For example, they can have a go at the science quiz and find out about roots, leaves and flowers. The progress tracker clearly shows how each child is getting on with a system of green and red lights. This would quickly show parents where more help is needed. --Amanda York

The companion volume to Full Marks's Key Stage 2 triple pack 1, this set tests and instructs on English and Maths skills and, on the disk called "Junior Topics", 12 different history topics ranging from the Ancient Egyptians to the Second World War. On each disk 12 different areas of knowledge are tested by four different games. Each game uses multiple choice questions to test a child's knowledge and the child must then use skill to match the colour of the correct answer to the same coloured item in the game. If the player gets the answer wrong, or fails to avoid the hazards in the game, they lose a life and the game will tell them the correct answer. If the player needs help, they can turn to the help pages which will give them all the information they need to be able to answer the questions. This is an ideal package for a child who is intimidated by the SATS, and needs reassuring: a more confident child may be more stretched by Ten out of Ten's SATS Test & Learn Key Stage 2. --Julia Cresswell
